We recently completed a project in Lutz, Florida. Another company tried an alternative drainfield repair using an aeration unit. The drainfield was not functioning. So we had to excavate the bad drainfield and the bad soil and haul it away. We replaced the bad soil with washed septic sand. This is a must for a properly designed septic system.
Proper drainage of the septic system requires a soil test to determine what the soil loading rate is for the native soils onsite. Once the size is determined the bad soil is removed and good soil is placed to aid in the drainage.
Once the the drainfield has been installed it is time for the Health Department to inspect the system and determine if the construction was done properly. Covering the system requires the right equipment to be used. We use track machines to lessen the load on the soil.

This installation was quite tedious because we had to permit the system through the Florida’s Bureau of Onsite Sewage and the Pasco County Health Department. SWS provided the owner’s with septic engineering and permitting. Prior to permitting and engineering SWS was able to provide the owner’s with a construction cost. This helps the owner’s determine the best options for their septic system needs.
The treatment tanks were installed and the existing plumbing was tied into the new treatment system. This septic system added additional capacity for the RV Park. Now as other septic tanks in the facility begin to fail these systems are added to the new system through a modification permit.
Another note is that the drainfield dispersal using drip irrigation is very flexible. We were able to install the drip system around the trees that were onsite. Geoflow drip irrigation has a patened technology that can keep the roots from getting into the drip emitters.

Using a pump vault unit can save space by adding a effluent pumping system to an enlarged septic tank. This saves space and leaves more room for the septic system drainfield.
Having septic problems during rain events can be frustrating. Many septic problems stem from not having watertight septic tanks. Many times when we are replacing drainfields that have become soggy and overloaded we make every effort to seal inlets, outlets, risers, lids, seams around the tank, and any other places water can into the system. Excess water can wash all of the solids into the drainfield and cause premature drainfield failure. Also, the aerobic organisms that live in the drainfield can turn anaerobic. The anaerobic organisms are 60 times slower than the aerobic organisms. This leaves a bio-mat build up in the drainfield area.
We have had to replace mainy septic tanks due to improper installation. Many times in the old days installers would punch a hole in the bottom of the tank to allow the tank to sink into the excavated hole. This was done many many times. However, this creates a problem during the rainy season when the groundwater becomes higher than the bottom of the drainfield. When these systems fail the septic tank has to be replaced due to the installation of a lift station would allow ground water to flow over and into the lift station and allow excess water to flow into the drainfield.
Many times installers will not install a riser access to access filters and internal septic tank componets. Also, sometimes they don’t use a bolt down kit or tank adapter kit. This can create problems with excess water and soil to get into the tank. This can create issues with excess water and soil getting into the drainfield. This is another problem with improperly sealed septic tanks.
A time dosed control panel can help determine if your septic system is receiving excess water. The control panel can be programmed to determine the amound water being used. Once the permitted amount of water is allowed to exit then the control panel will alarm you and let you know that their is a leak in your house or from a leaky septic tank. The benefit of the timed dosed control panel provides the owner the peace of mind to let them know that the excess water will not inundate the septic system drainfield.

This week we were working on two convenience stores that had been repaired in the last three years. The company had trusted the previous company to repair the system properly. One system had a tank that was cracked and the other system had risers and lids that leaked.
It pays to inspect what you are paying for when you higher a contractor. This got by the County Health Inspector. This riser had cracks in riser itself and it was not properly attached to the tank. This can cause a huge problem because when the seasonal high ground water table is higher than the interface of where the riser meets the tank then excess water leaks into the tank and is pumped into the drainfield. In this instance it caused the premature failure of the drainfield. If someone is installing a drainfield that it should last a lot longer than 3 years. Diagosing these failures properly is what you pay a good contractor to do.
The installation of dual alternating septic pumps is a requirement on systems over 500 gpd on commercial septic systems and residential systems over 2000 square feet. It is not a bad idea to have a built in redundancy for systems. We can design a system for a redundant or lag pump in the event of a main pump failure. We can make it so that you will get an alarm; however, the system will continue to function with the lag pump.
Installing commercial filters can improve the efficiency of the filtering depending on which filter you purchase. SWS carries filters from Tuf-Tite, Orenco, and Bear Onsite. These filters have been proving over time to provide excellent effluent filtering capabilities. There is a lot of science on effluent filters. The two main factors that affect the filtering capabilities is the pore size of the effluent filter and the amount of surface area that the filter has. The larger to orrifice size on the filter the more sludge that can enter the drainfield. The amount of surface area that the filter has determines the cleaning interval. So, the better filters have smaller pore size and more surface area. If you have small pore size and small surface area then the filter clogs too quickly.
