We recently completed a project in Lutz, Florida. Another company tried an alternative drainfield repair using an aeration unit. The drainfield was not functioning. So we had to excavate the bad drainfield and the bad soil and haul it away. We replaced the bad soil with washed septic sand. This is a must for a properly designed septic system.
Proper drainage of the septic system requires a soil test to determine what the soil loading rate is for the native soils onsite. Once the size is determined the bad soil is removed and good soil is placed to aid in the drainage.
Once the the drainfield has been installed it is time for the Health Department to inspect the system and determine if the construction was done properly. Covering the system requires the right equipment to be used. We use track machines to lessen the load on the soil.
When SWS covers we haul away any debris and have your site ready for your landscaping to be re-installed. If you don’t have a local landscaper we can recommend a company or two.

Southern Water and Soil replaced a PTI multi-pipe system that failed within a 3 year period. The PTI 9 pipe or ADS multi-pipe system is a product that receives a reduction in drainfield size that allows a more affordable solution.
There are usually more than one reason a drainfield fails. One must look at the amount of water, fats, oils, and grease that enter the septic system. When a system is reduced in size due to the product it leaves very little room for error.
Let SWS review your situation and provide you with septic solutions.
Southern Water and Soil, Inc., installed new tanks for a mobile home park that was adding 6 new homes to the park.
Installing septic tanks requires the right equipment at the right time. There are many factors that can make an installation go wrong. If the groundwater is too high then the ground may have to be dewattered. This can add 3,000 dollars to the project in a hurry.
Adding water to the tanks is very important to keep the septic tank from floating out of the ground. This also provides stability to the tanks after getting them set in place.
If you need a new septic system installed then don’t hesitate to give us a call. We can make sure you get the best product for your installation.
Southern Water and Soil, Inc., is one of Tampa’s best septic system replacement and repair specialists. The owner is Greg Mayfield. Greg is a former Florida Department of Health septic system inspector. He has worked in the industry for over 17 years and is familiar with the State of Florida septic rules. This is very important because when receiving quotes for drain field replacements it is important that the installer understands the rules.
Separation from seasonal high water tables, whether the system will be mounded, is there a limiting soil later… This is all important information and the homeowner needs to know the options. Should I get a low pressure dosing system? Should I get a time dosed control panel? What is the difference between an alarm an a time dosed control panel?
A time dosed control panel disperses water out in increments and allows the drainfield time to soak up the effluent that is applied. This allows the drainfield to recover and last longer.
Sometimes a drainfield replacement is required due to drainfield failure. There are many things that can cause a drainfield to fail.
1. Excessive water use
2. Water leaks
3. Use of Fats, oils, and greases
4. Harmful chemicals
5. Roots from trees
6. System damage by vehicular traffic.
7. System damage or botched repairs.
We have seen many different things that can cause septic problems. It is important that you can trust someone to repair the system correctly.

Using a pump vault unit can save space by adding a effluent pumping system to an enlarged septic tank. This saves space and leaves more room for the septic system drainfield.
Having septic problems during rain events can be frustrating. Many septic problems stem from not having watertight septic tanks. Many times when we are replacing drainfields that have become soggy and overloaded we make every effort to seal inlets, outlets, risers, lids, seams around the tank, and any other places water can into the system. Excess water can wash all of the solids into the drainfield and cause premature drainfield failure. Also, the aerobic organisms that live in the drainfield can turn anaerobic. The anaerobic organisms are 60 times slower than the aerobic organisms. This leaves a bio-mat build up in the drainfield area.
We have had to replace mainy septic tanks due to improper installation. Many times in the old days installers would punch a hole in the bottom of the tank to allow the tank to sink into the excavated hole. This was done many many times. However, this creates a problem during the rainy season when the groundwater becomes higher than the bottom of the drainfield. When these systems fail the septic tank has to be replaced due to the installation of a lift station would allow ground water to flow over and into the lift station and allow excess water to flow into the drainfield.
Many times installers will not install a riser access to access filters and internal septic tank componets. Also, sometimes they don’t use a bolt down kit or tank adapter kit. This can create problems with excess water and soil to get into the tank. This can create issues with excess water and soil getting into the drainfield. This is another problem with improperly sealed septic tanks.
A time dosed control panel can help determine if your septic system is receiving excess water. The control panel can be programmed to determine the amound water being used. Once the permitted amount of water is allowed to exit then the control panel will alarm you and let you know that their is a leak in your house or from a leaky septic tank. The benefit of the timed dosed control panel provides the owner the peace of mind to let them know that the excess water will not inundate the septic system drainfield.
If your septic system is blowing out or backing up and you have foul odors or mushy and soggy areas around your septic tank or drainfield then let the septic system experts at SWS diagnose your septic drainfield problems.

This week we were working on two convenience stores that had been repaired in the last three years. The company had trusted the previous company to repair the system properly. One system had a tank that was cracked and the other system had risers and lids that leaked.
It pays to inspect what you are paying for when you higher a contractor. This got by the County Health Inspector. This riser had cracks in riser itself and it was not properly attached to the tank. This can cause a huge problem because when the seasonal high ground water table is higher than the interface of where the riser meets the tank then excess water leaks into the tank and is pumped into the drainfield. In this instance it caused the premature failure of the drainfield. If someone is installing a drainfield that it should last a lot longer than 3 years. Diagosing these failures properly is what you pay a good contractor to do.
The installation of dual alternating septic pumps is a requirement on systems over 500 gpd on commercial septic systems and residential systems over 2000 square feet. It is not a bad idea to have a built in redundancy for systems. We can design a system for a redundant or lag pump in the event of a main pump failure. We can make it so that you will get an alarm; however, the system will continue to function with the lag pump.
Installing commercial filters can improve the efficiency of the filtering depending on which filter you purchase. SWS carries filters from Tuf-Tite, Orenco, and Bear Onsite. These filters have been proving over time to provide excellent effluent filtering capabilities. There is a lot of science on effluent filters. The two main factors that affect the filtering capabilities is the pore size of the effluent filter and the amount of surface area that the filter has. The larger to orrifice size on the filter the more sludge that can enter the drainfield. The amount of surface area that the filter has determines the cleaning interval. So, the better filters have smaller pore size and more surface area. If you have small pore size and small surface area then the filter clogs too quickly.
When it comes to septic system design and diagnostics allow the professional team and Southern Water and Soil, Inc., provide you with excellent service.
Are you having septic system drain field problems? Do you have drains that are backing up or a mushy soft spot in the yard? If so, then have the experts at Southern Water and Soil, Inc., take a look at the problem and see what is going on with your septic system. Many times customers call us and ask questions regarding their septic system issues. Drainfield problems can cause problems such as plumbing that backs up or smells in and around the drainfield itself. Drainfield failures can be caused by many different issues. So, let the guys at SWS take a look and find out what is troubling your septic system.
During a septic system installation soil that is unsuitable for septic effluent drainage must be excavated. Also, old drainfield will need to be removed in order for the system to percolate through the soil. A picture below shows an excavation that is ready for the health departments inspection. SWS wants the septic system to function properly and this is an important step in the installation process.
A proper excavation must be completed by the septic tank contractor to properly bed the drainfield product and provide a system that will function over time. Discuss your septic problems with competent staff at SWS and see what other precautions need to be maintained.
Preparing the drainfield bed to the proper height is required. If a seasonal high water table is encountered or a limiting soil layer can impact the height of your septic system. We get questions all the time from customers about why their septic system is too high. We go over their septic system requirements and provide alternative septic solutions to lower their septic system. Some of the options include alternative locations, Geoflow drip irrigation, Norweco Treatment Systems, ATU’s, and low profile Infiltrator chambers and PTI Multi-Pipe systems. SWS can design and engineer your septic system after you have made an educated decision on the options that are out there for your system.
PTI Multi Pipe and Infiltrator Chambers are an example of systems that receive a reduction in height from 12″ to 8″. This provides a 4″ reduction in the height of the septic system. Geoflow Drip Irrigation is an engineered septic system that reduces the drainfield size on height and overall dimensions. Drip irrigation reduces the height by 11.5″ due to product only being 0.5″ in height. If you are looking for septic system mound height reductions or septic system aerial size reductions then let SWS go over the different options for you.
If you want all your septic system options and someone that doesn’t mind discussing your septic issues then give SWS a call and we can discuss your septic and drainfield problems. Call us today! 813-785-0500
